Christmas Miracles

This heartwarming documentary explores the spirit of Christmas with some tales of “Christmas Miracles”.  We meet some ordinary kiwi families who are struck by a crisis just as they are looking forward to Christmas.  But little do they know that just when they need it most, “Santa” (and some generous companies) will bring them a Christmas Miracle.

This special was filmed at Christmas and features four families – like the Cooks.  The Cooks’ Christmas was thrown into chaos when their three-year-old son Jonathan had a horrific accident at a Christmas party and was rushed to Starship.  To make matters worse Jonathan’s pregnant mother went into labour the same day and couldn’t be at his side.  Although Jonathan miraculously survived his terrible head injuries, his main worry was missing out on Santa and his present at the Christmas party.  But unbeknown to the Cooks, we were arranging a wonderful Christmas Miracle to make all Jonathan’s wishes come true.

The three other families in the Christmas special were just as deserving of some special Christmas cheer.  The task of finding and filming the families fell to researcher/director Charlotte Purdy who spent a frantic few weeks calling emergency services and organizations like victim support.  “It was a scary prospect having to find families to film only weeks before Christmas.  But everyone was incredibly helpful and we came across so many sad stories, it was difficult to choose only four.”
