Showtime.  In community halls across the country, pockets of passionate kiwis share one mission … to entertain! Welcome to the world of amateur theatre. With tight budgets and even tighter tights, it’s where chefs and farmers by day, become directors and divas by night.   Like us on facebook.

In this exciting new series, two theatres take the spotlight, one big city, the other small town.  We follow their dramas on-stage and off, in the two month countdown to opening night.

From the agony of auditions through to opening night nerves, we go backstage and share in the melodramas and mishaps, tantrums and triumphs of these ‘everyday’ New Zealanders and their love for the ‘magic’ of theatre.

prog-showtime-sevenDeep in suburban Auckland, at the Howick Little Theatre, Director Peter Meikle is about to audition his ‘darling divas’ for British Comedy Entertaining Angels.  A veteran of 150 plays, Peter is an amateur dramatics regular with quite a reputation. But no amount of experience can guard against sickness, missed rehearsals, diva behaviour and set design disputes. Will the play that’s been billed as a comedy turn to tragedy, leaving the audience – and Peter – crying in the aisles on opening night?

In the small Kaipara town of Maungatoroto, the local Christmas Panto is always an end-of-year highlight.  But after a slow season, its make or break for the 50 year old Otamatea Rep Theatre. President Peter Flower and his wife Maura, decide to take four One Act Plays on the road to raise funds. But with less than an hour to their first performance, there’s no sound, no lighting and no bums on seats … will the show go on? Meanwhile, farmer and devoted thespian Peter Matheson has put up his hand to direct the 3 Little Pigs panto. Not only is he scared stiff about wrangling 30 kids through rehearsals, he’s also cast his nemesis Ian, in one of the leading roles. Has he bitten off more than he can chew?

All will be revealed when the curtains and lights come up … it’s Showtime!
