Unsung Heroes

prog-unsung-heroes

Every year more than a million Kiwis volunteer in our community. They are the backbone of our non-profit organisations, which keep our country running – literally. They offer their time and expertise in emergency services, working with the homeless, youth at risk, caring for people and animals that would be lost without them. These volunteers are our Unsung Heroes screened on TV One.  Watch on demand at www.tvnz.co.nz/unsungheroes

Unsung Heroes feature over 18 organisations including the Maori Wardens, St Johns paramedics, The Auckland City Mission, The SPCA and Wellington Night Shelter.  Producer Bridgid Davis says, “We were staggered by the amount of volunteers that work on top of fulltime jobs. These people are at the forefront of social and emergency services making sure people don’t fall through the gaps. We were humbled by the work that they do and their endless energy. The hardest part of making this show was getting these volunteers to talk, as they are indeed the silent heroes of our communities. Once they start giving to organisations it’s very hard for most to stop, some volunteers end up making it their life mission and changing careers. “

The show is a mixture of gritty frontline work and feel good volunteering. It shows the amazing work these Kiwis do everyday for love not money.
