Yellow for Hermaphrodite Mani's Story
In nature there have always been individuals who are simply different, Mani Mitchell is one of those. Mani was born with what doctors call “ambiguous genitalia” she’s a hermaphrodite. This is the story of a New Zealander who’s neither a man nor a woman. But who sees herself as a unique combination of both.
Mani reflects that “my life hasn’t been ordinary and it hasn’t been boring, it has been utterly extraordinary and most of that is because I was born intersexual. Now in saying that, I’m not saying for a moment that I’m glad all those terrible things that happened, but I guess we have lives and I stand and reflect on mine and it has been a very extraordinary life and I’m absolutely determined that however many years that I have left, that it’s going to be bloody wonderful.”
Mani’s whole life has been a journey and this documentary Yellow for Hermaphrodite: Mani’s Story follows her journey to discover who she is.
We follow Mani as she goes to America to meet her friend David – another intersex person. Like Mani he grew up believing he was the only person in the world whose genitalia were different, but then he found Mani and Mani found him. Mani was raised as a girl, David as a boy.
